Behind Alfie Jo’s
Mercedes is a Doctor in Food and Nutrition with a lifelong passion for how food shapes health, culture, and memory. She grew up in Rosario, Argentina, where la merienda — the afternoon pause for coffee, mate or tea with something sweet — is a daily ritual of comfort and community.
Alfajores were never just biscuits, but part of that shared moment. When Mercedes later moved to Barcelona, she began recreating them as a hobby, adapting traditional recipes to new values and palates. Friends became tasters, and soon the idea of turning alfajores into something more began to grow.
At the heart of Alfie Jo’s (La Merienda) is a belief that nutrition, quality, and taste belong together. The name reflects both her origins and her new chapter: La Merienda carries the Argentine tradition, while Alfie Jo’s offers a warm, approachable adaptation. Each alfajor is plant-based, crafted with simple, high-quality ingredients — with gluten-free options included.
Now based in Cork, Mercedes makes handmade alfajores in small batches. From coconut & lemon, to walnut & caramel, to the classic chocolate-coated, each flavour honours tradition while embracing today’s diverse tastes. Alfie Jo’s is about connecting places and people — combining the warmth of Argentina, the creativity of Barcelona, and the openness of Ireland in every bite.
